Whether you watched the Oscars on Sunday night or not, if you happen to browse the Internet, you would know that some out of the ordinary moments occurred. We have Ellen Degeneres to thank for that, and of course John Travolta.
Ellen Degeneres hosted the Oscars on Sunday, and had a little fun with the audience members. She ordered some pizza, stole Lupita's lip gloss and of course she took some selfies. During one of her many classic goofy Ellen explorts to the audience, Ellen took one particular with many famous friends including Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Brad Pitt and Meryl Streep.
Ellen said she wanted to get the most retweets in Twitter history and she succeeded! She also broke Twitter. For many users Twitter was shut down for five to 10 minutes from the excessive retweets and Oscar related Tweets, thanks Ellen. Twitter has broken down before, but this time it was legendary.
In
other Oscar related news, John Travolta introduced Idina Menzel when she came
out to sing Let it Go from the hit movie of the year, Frozen. One would think
that for someone in the musical spotlight like John Travolta is, the least he
could do would be to appropriately introduce a fellow star. Maybe it was the
nerves, maybe it was straight ignorance, but poor John Travolta introduced her
as Adela Dazeem instead. According to Twitter, people were a little confused at
first, asking if they heard him right. When everyone came to the same
conclusion that he totally butchered her name, Twitter when crazy with comments
about Travolta’s little error. There are even entire Twitter handles dedicated
to the lovely Adela Dazeem, which characteristically have everything spelled
entirely wrong to honor the language of dear John Travolta.
People even created programs that can translate
your name Travolta style. Translate yours right here!
Travolta’s publicist definitely has some serious work to do with this little PR
nightmare. Travolta and his publicist issued a statement
to CNN on Tuesday correcting the mispronunciation. Maybe we should all just
Let it Go!
The Oscar’s are just another prime example of the
power of social media. News and information, and of course PR blunders, can go
worldwide in an instant. It demonstrates the control social media has over the
public. With the endorsement of a celebrity or anyone with social standing,
anything can go viral and anything can become common knowledge in an instant.
Until Next Time,
Nikki Darling
